Grade 6 students at Mountain Park School participate in an exploratory wheel of complementary courses.

Art 6

Students will explore a variety of media and techniques to create art through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting, fabric arts and photography. Student projects will involve exploration of natural objects, abstraction, distortion, symbolic meaning, and analysis of the elements of composition, with a focus on refining techniques learned in earlier grades.

CTF Construction 6

Students will be introduced to the world of woodworking by constructing a few small projects (phone holder, sliding bookends) that require the use of some basic hand tools and skills. Students will practice measuring, sanding, cutting, drilling, and wood burning by using various tools and machinery. After we complete our small wood projects, we will investigate the theory of flight by investigating and constructing either rockets, hot air balloons, or gliders. Students will participate in the use of basic tools and machinery to solve problems, construct projects, and learn to navigate safely in a shop environment.

Power Up Your Learning 6

Power Up Your Learning supports students in understanding their learning preferences and strengths. Students learn how to access, use and apply learning technologies, as well as how to apply general and subject-specific strategies. Learning opportunities and supports are designed with each student to identify and enhance individual abilities, so that they develop a foundation of learning to function effectively in life and work.

Music 6

Students will discover and develop skills such as rhythm, melody, harmony, creating, and reading music by learning and performing. Through various activities, students will gain an appreciation for various music genres, the element of music, and creating electronic music.  Also, students will develop their personal and ensemble performance skills. Students will have the opportunity to perform two concerts throughout the year and participate in a clinic day at MRU learning from professional musicians. Instruments included in our band are flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, and percussion.
