2026 - 2027 Grade 8 Complementary Program Overview


Digital Art & Design 8

  • Students build on foundational art skills while continuing to explore creative possibilities using digital tools and technologies.
  • Students engage in design thinking, creative problem-solving, and the design process as they develop ideas and refine their digital artwork.
  • Using Procreate with Apple Pencils on iPads, students review and strengthen their understanding of basic design software, including layers, brushes, colour, and digital composition. 
  • Career pathways in digital art and design, such as illustration, character design, animation, and media arts will be explored.
  • Projects may include opportunities to illustrate a children’s book, experiment with basic animation, and explore introductory concepts in 3D modelling.
  • This course supports the development of creativity, digital literacy, and visual communication skills, while encouraging students to connect personal ideas to real-world applications in digital design careers.

Electronic Music 8

  • Electronic Music is a hands-on course where students create original music using digital tools such as BandLab and GarageBand.
  • Students will explore the elements of music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and song structure, while learning basic music production and audio-editing skills.
  • Through individual and collaborative projects, students will compose, record, edit, and share music in a creative and supportive environment.

CTF Construction 8

  • In Construction 8 students will be required to use materials, machinery and tools to develop woodworking projects such as a sanding block, coat rack, or a pencil truck.
  • These projects will develop the required skills necessary for students to design, construct, and appraise a group catapult challenge modelled from the popular game Angry Birds.

Drama 8

  • Drama 8 is the perfect place to have fun and try something new! Get ready to dive into mask work, accents, and improvisation for an experience that’s all about creativity and self-expression.
  • In the mask unit we will transform into characters and make a custom mask straight from your imagination! Learn how masks can completely change the way you move, speak, and act.
  • During accent work we'll learn how to develop an accent and make any character sound authentic.
  • Improvisation is all about thinking fast and acting faster! With improv games and exercises, you’ll become quick on your feet, sharpening your creativity and reacting in the moment to whatever comes your way.

Art 8

  • While considering the elements of art, students will explore a variety of media including but not limited to, clay sculptures, glazing, water colour paint, grid work, still life composition, mixed media, and acrylic pouring.
  • Students will learn new skills and techniques and be able to reflect and communicate about their composition and intentions.

Band 8 (Full Year)

  • Band 8, a continuation of Band 7, is a great opportunity to further develop the beginning skills on one's chosen instrument. 
  • Learning opportunities include more interesting music, a three day band camp, clinics with guest musicians and conductors, and performances at concerts and music festivals.
  • Anyone with previous experience playing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument is welcome to take Band 8, BUT even if you're new to Band you can still take this course!

CTF Foods 8

  • In Foods 8 students will learn how to cook more challenging recipes that require greater speed and comprehension.
  • Through weekly cooking challenges, students will experience creative problem solving as they collaborate to achieve a common goal — delicious food.
  • Students will be required to use communication skills as they form effective working relationships with their group members.
  • Students will apply and reinforce learning developed in other subject areas.  Specifically, reading comprehension, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction and how to read and use fractions will be practiced.
  • This class provides students with important learning opportunities to explore occupation areas and to develop skills that can be applied in their daily lives, now and in the future.

Architecture and Design 8 (CTF Computing Science 8) 

  • Students will explore how creative ideas become real-world structures through hands-on projects and digital design tools.
  • Using programs like Minecraft, Planner 5D, and physical model building, students will learn how architects, engineers, and designers plan, test, and improve their ideas.
  • Students will develop skills in design thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and creativity. Whether designing a traditional Japanese pagoda, building a bridge prototype, or creating a dream home, students will think like real-world innovators while having fun bringing their ideas to life.
