2026 - 2027 Grade 9 Complementary Program Overview


Band 9 (Full Year)

  • Band 9 offers students the opportunity to continue to develop their personal and ensemble performance skills while creating a wide variety of new music with other musicians.
  • Students will have the opportunity to perform in several concerts throughout the year, participate in the AIBF music festival, perform for feeder elementary schools, and have the option of attending a three-day overnight band workshop retreat.
  • Students also enjoy leadership opportunities and can become mentors for younger students. 
  • No previous band experience is necessary! New students will be mentored by their peers.

Drama 9

  • This class is for students who are ready to kick, punch, and act their way to the stage!
  • Students dive into the high-energy world of stage combat, intense scene study, and gore makeup — the aspects of drama that make performances unforgettable.
  • In the stage combat unit students will learn safe, but epic, realistic fight choreography, from hand-to-hand combat to swords.
  • During the scene study unit students will choose from powerful scenes to sharpen their acting skills with in-depth character work.
  • The art of creating special effects like blood, bruises, cuts, and burns will be explored during the core make-up unit.
  • Students who dream of becoming a stunt performer, an actor, or just want to push the limits of their creativity will thrive in Drama 9.

Leadership 9

  • This class offers students the opportunity to work together to help promote a positive school culture at MPS.
  • Students will create the yearbook and organize activities like sports day, school dances, spirit weeks, and assemblies. 
  • Interested students should enjoy the idea of being able to plan school activities from beginning to end. 
  • This class is project-based with the goal being to enhance school climate through student-led activities. 
  • There will be an extra-curricular component and students must be willing to give up free time before classes, at lunch, or after school on occasion. 
  • Students are required to complete an Expression of Interest Form to join this class.

Film Studies 9 (CTF Design Studies 9C)

  • Students will discover a variety of topics including camera distance, camera angles, history of film, and film genres.
  • By viewing film clips students will learn how techniques are used.
  • Students will create their own films to try out the various concepts. 
  • The final project will include a short film festival.

CTF Construction 9

  • All large woodworking machinery will be used to complete projects such as a 'Banana Tree' and a 'Lap Desk'. 
  • The course will culminate with a unit on air and aerodynamics and creation of CO2 drag race cars.
  • Students who complete all required projects will also design and construct a small project of their choice.

CTF Digital Art & Design 9

  • Students will learn how to create stunning digital art, all while learning about the powerful tools and rich features of an app called Procreate.
  • Using iPads and Apple Pencils students will experiment with layers, brushes, colour, composition, and other digital techniques.
  • Students will engage in design thinking, the design process, and creative problem-solving as they develop and refine their original ideas.
  • Building on this foundation, students will move into a choice-based project, allowing for increased creative freedom and personal voice in their work.
  • Throughout the course, students explore career pathways in digital art and design, such as illustration, character design, animation, game design, and media arts.

Art 9

  • While considering the elements of arts, students will explore a variety of media including, but not limited to, clay expressive portrait sculptures, Prisma pencil crayons, alcohol inks, and acrylic pouring.
  • Students will learn new skills and techniques and be able to reflect and communicate about their composition and intentions.

CTF Foods 9

  • In Foods 9 students will learn how to cook more complicated recipes, as well as multiple recipes per class. Skill development and recipe complexity are also more challenging at this grade level.
  • Through weekly cooking challenges, students will experience creative problem solving as they collaborate to achieve a common goal — delicious food.
  • Students will be required to use communication skills as they form effective working relationships with their group members.
  • Students will apply and reinforce learning developed in other subject areas.  Specifically, reading comprehension, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction and how to read and use fractions will be practiced.
  • This class provides students with important learning opportunities to explore occupation areas and to develop skills that can be applied in their daily lives, now and in the future.
