MPS Weekly Update | December 13, 2024

What an exciting time of year with so much activity in and out of the classroom. As we approach the final school week of the 2024 year, we wanted to share some news to keep you in the loop!

MPS School Council Meeting | Dec 16

All community members are invited to attend our final School Council meeting of the year on Monday, Dec 16th at 6:30 in the Learning Commons.

Spirit Week | December 16th – 20th

One of the ways we build connection and belonging at MPS is for students and staff to participate in school Spirt Week.

·       Monday, December 16th - Holiday Hat Day where students are encouraged to wear hats or headbands that represent the season

·       Tuesday, December 17th - Holiday Movie Character Day where students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite holiday/movie character

·       Wednesday, December 18th - "Santa's Helper" Day where students are encouraged to dress up as any of Santa's Helpers - reindeer, elves, Ms. Claus, etc.

·       Thursday, December 19th - Ugly Sweater Day where students are encouraged to wear their ugliest holiday sweaters

·       Friday, December 20th - Pajama Day where students can stay cozy in their PJs for the last school day of the year.

Street Fair

We will be having the annual MPS Street Fair on Friday, December 20th. Street Fair is an hour block of time where we come together as a community to celebrate the season before our Winter Break. Each homeroom has come up with an idea and plan for a ‘winter carnival’ station. During the hour, students will be able to go to different classrooms and partake in the games and activities to enjoy connecting with their peers and win prizes. Most games will cost a small amount of money (anywhere from $1-$2), but there will also be activities that don’t have a cost associated. The money raised will go towards the Calgary Food Bank in place of our usual food drive this season.

Volleyball Tryouts

Volleyball tryouts will begin when students return from Winter Break. The schedule will be shared in the final weekly update before Winter Break as well as on the PE D2L shell. A reminder that grade 8s and 9s are welcome to try-out for the senior team. Grade 6/7/8 are welcome to try-out for the junior team. Lunch time intramurals will be volleyball when we return from Winter Break.

Grade 6 and 7 | Be Brave Hitmen Game

All Grade 6 & 7 students, please return signed field trip forms to your homeroom teacher for the Calgary Hitmen game!

If you are in need of forms, please call the main office @ 403-777-6442 and they can help you.

There are some great opportunities for some special student experiences at the Hitmen Be Brave game in February. If interested, parents can check out the following link:

MPS Learning Lounge

A reminder that in-person Learning Support Sessions continue to be available for students each morning before classes in the MPS Learning Commons. We are targeting two core subject areas each day in alignment with our 2024-2025 School Development Plan: Mathematics and Literacy. Various subject area teachers are present to provide an additional layer of support for those students who wish to access it as follows:

·       Monday - Thursday from 8:30-9:00 am

·       Front doors will be unlocked for student entry from 8:25-8:35 am only. Students must be here by 8:35 at the latest in order to make effective use of this support. Students arriving after this time will need to wait until the doors re-open at the morning bell.

·       Students are welcome to attend as often as needed but must come prepared to learn with assignments, homework, test review or specific topics they require support with (ex. polynomials, persuasive essay writing, etc.).

·       Students will be provided access to computers when required to utilize D2L and written assignment work only

Library

Wouldn't it be great to start the New Year off with no overdue library books? Please remind your student to return their overdue library books to the return bin NEXT WEEK!

What do I do?

What do I do?

This library book is 42

Years overdue.

I admit that it's mine

But I can't pay the fine---

Should I turn it in?

Or hide it again?

What do I do?

What do I do?
