Grade 6 students at Mountain Park School participate in an exploratory wheel of complementary courses.
Art 6
While learning the elements of arts, students will explore a variety of media including oil pastel, water colour, Neurographic Art, clay sculpture, glazing, one and two point perspective and pencil crayon. Students will learn new skills and techniques, and also be able to reflect and communicate about their composition and intentions.
Ukulele 6
This course is designed to be an introductory experience to develop musical skills while playing the ukulele. Students will discover and develop skills such as rhythm, melody, harmony, singing, and reading music. Through various activities, students will gain an appreciation for various music genres, song structure, and creating music for performance purposes.
CTF Construction 6
Students will learn how to function in a construction environment. Three main areas will be explored: safety, skill development, design and team building. Students will learn the proper use of tools to construct small projects. The final portion of the program will require students to work in teams to design, create, communicate and appraise projects such as hot air balloons, rockets or gliders.
Power Up Your Learning 6
Power Up Your Learning supports students in understanding their learning preferences and strengths. Students learn how to access, use and apply learning technologies, as well as how to apply general and subject-specific strategies. Learning opportunities and supports are designed with each student to identify and enhance individual abilities, so that they develop a foundation of learning to function effectively in life, work and continued learning upon graduation from high school.
Music 6
Students will discover and develop skills such as rhythm, melody, harmony, singing, and reading music by learning and performing. Through various activities, students will gain an appreciation for various music genres, song structure, and creating music for performance purposes. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of musical instruments, which can include the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, French horn, Ukulele and percussion. Students will also have the opportunity to perform as a musical ensemble.
