MPS Weekly Update | Sept 2, 2026

What a joyful and busy first week back to school it has been! Our hallways have been buzzing with energy as students settle into new routines, learn their schedules and reconnect with friends after the summer break. Our new grade 6 Wolverines have found their footing (wrong turns and all) and they are catching on fast! Staff are enjoying getting to know our students and helping build the relationships and opportunities for new friendships that make our community special. 

This fall, the CBE has hired hundreds of teachers, education assistants, and other school staff to support student learning. These positions have been funded by the Government of Alberta with the intention of addressing classroom complexity and class sizes. Mountain Park School was provided with two teaching positions to support the reduction of class sizes, which allowed us to add two additional homerooms to our class configuration. This, combined with staff movement and our growing population, has resulted in several new staff joining our Mountain Park family this year. We are pleased to welcome the following new staff to our school for the 2026–27 school year:

Important Parent Learning Opportunity: Social Media & Technology Safety 

As parents and caregivers, we know that helping adolescents navigate social media, smartphones, online gaming, artificial intelligence, and digital relationships can be both challenging and overwhelming. The online world is changing rapidly, and staying informed is one of the most effective ways we can support the safety, well-being, and healthy development of our children.

We are pleased to share an invitation our amazing Mountain Park School Council, which is sponsoring a parent presentation featuring renowned digital safety expert Paul Davis. Mr. Davis will be presenting to all our students during the school day on Sept 17 and we will be using time during a homeroom series before and after the presentation designed to build on the information learned. We strongly encourage all parents and caregivers to attend this important and informative evening.

Communication

Brightspace by D2L

In addition to the Weekly Update posted each week to our School Website, parents and guardians can expect to see classroom weekly updates in each class D2L ‘shell’. If you are new to D2L, this is a virtual classroom environment where teachers post weekly updates, resources and pertinent information for each class. This is particularly helpful for home-based review or if your child misses any of their classes. Click here for a helpful video for parents who are new to D2L.

Should you have any questions or concerns about your child at any point during the school year, your first point of contact should be your child’s teacher. All staff email addresses can be found here. Alternatively, feel free to contact our front office to leave a message for the appropriate teacher.   

Cross Country

The Cross Country team started right away this week.  This team is open to all grades and has a no-cut roster.  The first meet will be Thursday, Sept 10 at North Glenmore Park.  Students who are interested in participating must have attended at least one practice and returned their forms to Ms. Taylor by Sept. 9th.  Our next practice is Sept. 8 after school from 4:00-4:45.  Please contact jktaylor@cbe.ab.ca with any questions.

Bikes, Scooters & Skateboards

We are happy to see so many students choosing active transportation to and from school. For everyone’s safety, students are asked to walk their bikes, scooters, and skateboards while on school grounds. The City of Calgary strongly recommends helmet use for all wheeled activities, and helmets are required by law when riding bikes and e-bikes. 

Beverages

To help keep our school clean and support healthy choices, students are encouraged to bring non-spill water bottles to school. Slurpees, iced-cap-style drinks, open pop, and energy drinks should not be brought into the building. Sealed beverages may be stored in student lockers until lunchtime or after school.
